The Red Light Secrets: Museum of Prostitution takes you inside a world which most people have never visited. The museum is based inside a once famous brothel, where a Dutch prostitute was once murdered.
Upon entering you are led to a cinema and watch a short movie showing what goes on inside the Red Light District. This in itself is interesting because you see footage which is usually not captured by camera, as photography is strictly prohibited in most areas of De Wallen.
Going through the corridors and up the stairs, you enter a replica of a Red Light Sex Window, to experience what it’s like inside the rooms. If you have the audio walk-through you can hear the stories and opinions of real sex workers.
There is also the opportunity to sit on a stall in front of a fake window with videos of men peering at you and making gestures, similar to what Amsterdam’s window sex workers experience on a daily basis. It is a really interesting and surreal experience, making many question whether they could ever stomach doing a job where they were judged by so many people day in day out.
